A Focus On The Origins Of Pa Kua Knowledge
A FOCUS ON THE ORIGINS OF PA KUA KNOWLEDGE
When we talk about the origins of Pa Kua knowledge we are talking about the origins of the universe and its natural laws. Pa Kua is the study of the way the world functions, the actions we take, the reactions we get, and the consequences of those actions. If I jump, I will come down. If I eat unhealthy, I will become disharmonic. These ideas are not unique to our tradition, but are universal principles that can be found in every culture, religion, and tradition that exists in our world.
Study world religions, the culture of the Navajo, the Chinese, or the Egyptians and you will find explanations for Yin/Yang, Sky/Man/Earth, and all the other concepts we study. Even the principles of science exist within these teachings. You can see within our own disciplines the laws of gravity, thermodynamics, energy conservation, and countless others. The names might change, the symbols might look different, but the knowledge remains universal. So why do we call it Pa Kua knowledge?
More than any other culture on earth, the Chinese have studied these concepts in the broadest terms. For thousands of years they pursued this knowledge, developing the largest vocabulary for the study of energy, the 5 elements, the 8 changes, ect. One of the oldest Chinese texts is the Nei Jing. This text, supposedly written by the mythological “Yellow Emperor,” contains the central doctrine of Chinese internal medicine and was written almost five millennia ago. Contained within these writings are the core concepts we still use in Pa Kua today. Thus, when this universal knowledge was first passed down to the original master of our school, it was done so using the Chinese tradition and understanding of these concepts.
Knowing this, we should always remember not to limit our understanding of these ideas to our own institutions and traditions, as they may present themselves in many different forms. We can also see that anyone of any cultural, religious, or national background can benefit from these ideas.
